(laughs)
\n32:38
\n– Well, they seem to be doing pretty good–
\n32:40
\n– Yeah, that’s right.
\n32:41
\nThat’s right, they say we don’t have to follow you anymore.
\n32:44
\nBut Lee Kuan Yew, of course, is a special case.
\n32:48
\nHere he is–
\n32:48
\n– But what are those qualities?
\n32:50
\n– Well, he knew what he wanted to get done and he did it.
\n32:55
\nAnd in a small, relative enclave
\n32:59
\nand he did a lot of things that we tutted about,
\n33:02
\nin terms of democracy, he was
\n33:05
\na little too eager to put people in jail
\n33:07
\nto quiet down opposition
\n33:10
\nand worry about what the newspapers said about him
\n33:13
\nand so forth.
\n33:14
\nBut he had a drive to develop Singapore
\n33:18
\nwith a very strong civil service,
\n33:22
\nvery effective, corrupt-free government,
\n33:25
\nas near as I can see, and he pulled it off,
\n33:28
\nand he maintained a very strong position.
\n33:31
\nAnd Singapore is, economically, I don’t know
\n33:35
\nwhere it ranks in the world by pro-capita income, but it’s–
\n33:39
\n– Way up there.
\n33:40
\n– [Paul] Very high, come up from nothing.
\n33:41
\n– So, your principles, if I get it correctly,
\n33:44
\nyour principles would be a great leader
\n33:46
\nhas an accurate vision of where to go.
\n33:50
\nA great leader has,
\n33:52
\nwill fight the opposition
\n33:57
\nin pursuit of that, and deliver.
\n33:59
\nA great leader has a deep caring for the people
\n34:02
\nthat they’re leading.
\n34:04
\nA great leader also seems to be leading
\n34:07
\nwith an effective management
\n34:12
\nof civil service
\n34:14
\nin government, or a effective bureaucracy
\n34:18
\nto carry those things through.
\n34:20
\nAre those the principles?
\n34:22
\n– Well, I think we have to add a principle, the one you had,
\n34:25
\nyou gotta have a respect for the people.
\n34:28
\nI don’t know if you included that.
\n34:31
\nSome of the qualities you mentioned,
\n34:32
\nyou could apply to Adolf Hitler.
\n34:35
\nBut we don’t want an Adolf Hitler,
\n34:38
\nwe want somebody who’s got some democratic instincts
\n34:41
\nand recognizes that he’s only there temporarily.
\n34:44
\nAnd that he wants to lead the country effectively,
\n34:51
\nbut peaceably,
\n34:53
\nand without dictatorial demands.
\n34:59
\nSo, it’s a nice balance to be in charge,
\n35:01
\nand maybe less efficient when you have to deal with
\n35:06
\npublic opinion and different points of view.
\n35:09
\nBut it’s obviously essential if democracies going to last.
\n35:13
\nWe legitimately worry about democracy now.
\n35:16
\nMy mother, who was quite a character herself,
\n35:19
\nI recall, vaguely, whining to her when I was,
\n35:24
\nprobably, a young man in government,
\n35:26
\nVietnam War or something, rioting in the streets…
\n35:32
\nWe were threatened, the country was threatened
\n35:34
\nto survive all these tensions.
\n35:37
\nShe said, sonny boy, she didn’t call me sonny boy, (laughs)
\n35:42
\nshe said we’re 200 years of democracy,
\n35:46
\nwe’ve been a longer democracy
\n35:47
\nthan anybody else in the world,
\n35:49
\nwe’ve gotten over worse than this before,
\n35:51
\ngo get back to work and do something.
\n35:54
\nAnd I take a little comfort in that thought,
\n35:57
\nthat we can straighten ourselves out
\n35:59
\nafter this little turmoil, not so little turmoil.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
31:49 And the third name I was going to mention is, 31:52 I don’t know how much you ran into Zhu Rongji. 31:56 –
